Squirrels in the Garden - Winter Visitors

This time if year, many of my neighbors gray squirrels in their yards, teasing their dogs and chasing each other around the bare tree branches. Some love the crafty little visitors, and some really wish they would go away.

Here are some tips for living with (and enjoying) these cute critters. They are beneficial to nature in many ways, and enjoying their big personalities can be fun.

-- Feeding Squirrels: It's okay to feed them occasionally. They enjoy unsalted peanuts, which you can buy at many bird supply stores (such as Wild Birds Unlimited). They also like sunflower seed and corn.

-- Providing them with their own supply of goodies can actually help keep them away from your bird feeders.

-- Don't feed them by hand, as it's not healthy for the squirrel to become to friendly with humans.

-- You can also put out houses for the squirrels, which can also be found at wild bird stores.

For more on squirrels, pick up a copy of the Bird Watcher's Digest booklet on "Enjoying Squirrels" at their website, Birdwatchersdigest.com.

I thought that booklet, "Enjoying Squirrels," was a cookbook! :) My neighbors provide lots of peanuts for my squirrels, but that doesn't stop the pigs from attacking my bird feeders. My garden, Squirrelhaven, hosts about a half-dozen squirrels, pretty evenly divided between Fox Squirrels & Grays. They are fun to watch, though.

Ha ha. Sounds like it could be some kind of strange cookbook! :) It actually is a very informative little booklet about squirrels in America.

They're cute, and what's a little birdseed among friends?

I kinda like the little critters. They do provide endless entertainment for the dogs at work. I was impressed with your blog. Loved the photos and information.

We loving watching our squirrels, but I just wish they didn't take over the whole birdfeeding area. Even when we put out a special feeder away from the birdfeeders, they still want what isn't theirs, greedy little things.

Your photo of the squirrel and some of the comments brought back memories and prompted this comment. They sure are cute little buggers but when your competing with them for your avocados a word that rhymes with cute comes to mind.(only kidding)...I swear they were teasing me. Just when the fruit was ripe they would eat throught the stem and the avocado would fall to the ground. I think they knew when I was due home from work and would sit on the fence laughing at me when I noticed the ruined Avocados.

We have squirrels living next door here in Chicago, and even though it may be freezing cold outside, they still manage to wander over to my windowsill to eat peanuts and sunflower seeds I leave out for them.
I'm sure they are happy that soon things will melt a little bit and they can come out and terrorize the cats when the weather is warmer.. =)

Cape Town and surrounding areas are the only place in South Africa where there are squirrels. That is easy because the squirrels and the trees on which they feed are not endemic. The acorn trees does not grow in the very dry inland of South Africa. We live only 100 km north and no squirrels (no trees). I must say that we make a point to take any visitors to go and enjoy the little critters in Cape Town.

Thanks for the information you gave. I like your pictures, too. Our squirrels love to torment our dog. I think it's their entertainment. They know her boundaries, and almost take risks in how close they get to her.

They also eat my tomatoes just as they are ripening, and they tore down two of my sunflower plants, as well as taking the flower heads right off some of the plants. Our neighbor lady feeds them corn, and they bring it to our yard and let it lie around.

I have started taking photos of them, though, and have started to sort of like the goofy critters. Don't tell them I said that. They probably know it, though, because I'm letting my husband put food out for them in their own feeder on a bench.
